Both speedsters returned to practice for Los Angeles after missing the last two weeks.
The Los Angeles Chargers received a welcome boost on the practice field as two young offensive playmakers returned to practice after missing the last two weeks.
Running back Keaton Mitchell and wide receiver Brenen Thompson were both back on the field on Monday, giving the Chargers some much-needed positive news as they prepare for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
Both players had been sidelined throughout the final stretch of regular season preparation with undisclosed injuries, making their returns important with the season opener now just days away.
Mitchell's return is especially notable given the potential role he could have in Los Angeles' backfield.
The former Baltimore Ravens running back joined the Bolts this offseason in free agency and entered training camp with the assumption that he will have a featured role in Mike McDaniel's offense. Mitchell has already proved his explosiveness, especially as a big-play threat who can turn a small opening into a chunk gain.
The Chargers have several options at running back, but Mitchell brings a different element because of his juice and speed. If healthy, he could provide an important change-of-pace option and potentially earn meaningful touches throughout the season.
Getting him back on the practice field is just the first step.
Thompson is another player who could benefit significantly from getting back to work before the season begins.
The rookie wide receiver has spent the offseason adjusting to the speed of the next level while also refining his technique. His speed is his biggest strengths, giving Los Angeles and Justin Herbert another potential deep threat who can stretch defenses vertically.
Missing weeks of preparation is significant, especially for a rookie trying to earn the respect of the coaching staff, but getting back on the field now gives him an opportunity to regain his rhythm and show them what he can provide.
Los Angeles has plenty of expectations heading into the upcoming season, and maintaining the health of its offensive playmakers will be essential to their overall success. Mitchell and Thompson both bring traits that could make the Chargers' offense more dynamic paired with Herbert's arm talent and McDaniel's offensive mind.
The timing of their returns could not be much better given the circumstances. Mitchell now has a chance to work his way back into the running back rotation, while Thompson can use the remaining practices to make his case for a solidified role in the receiver room.
