Los Angeles Chargers veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack plans to return for a 13th NFL season in 2026 after contemplating retirement, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Chargers have made retaining him a priority, as losing him would leave a significant void in the team’s pass rush. He recorded 5.5 sacks, 42 total pressures, 32 tackles (19 solo), four forced fumbles and seven stuffs in 12 games for the Bolts this past season.
While those numbers may not match the elite production he posted earlier in his career—including a 17-sack season as recently as 2023—Mack has continued to show that his impact on games and his teammates goes far beyond his physical abilities. He remains stout against the run, can still disrupt the passer and command attention from opposing offensive lines, while his leadership and voice have proven just as valuable to this Chargers defense.
From a roster-building standpoint, Mack’s decision to play in 2026 gives the Chargers much-needed clarity heading into the offseason. Edge rusher is one of the team's biggest long term question, and retaining Mack would provide stability along the defensive front for at least one more season. Doing so would allow Los Angeles to allocate resources elsewhere in free agency or via the draft, such as the offensive line and skill positions.
However, edge rusher is one of the premium positions in today’s NFL, and proven veterans rarely hit the market without generating strong demand. Teams seeking immediate pass-rush help could view Mack as a short-term but impactful solution, which may ultimately drive up his value.
For Los Angeles, the priority is clear. Keeping Mack would maintain stability along the defensive front and prevent the need to aggressively address the position this offseason. Letting him walk would not only leave a void production-wise, but also strip the defense of a respected veteran presence in the locker room.
With retirement no longer a consideration, the Chargers’ focus now shifts to retaining Mack while determining how much they are willing to invest at one of the defense’s most important positions. Whether Mack ultimately returns to Los Angeles or signs elsewhere, his decision ensures his career will extend into a 13th NFL season, giving the likely future Pro Football Hall of Famer another opportunity to impact a contender and further strengthen an already decorated résumé.
