With four of five offensive line spots essentially settled, the battle for the starting left guard job is starting to heat up in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Chargers appear to have most of their starting offensive line set in stone entering training camp, but one position remains very much up for grabs.
With the Bolts' star tackle tandem of Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt back back healthy and expected to be full participants during training camp, along with veteran free agent signings Tyler Biadasz and Cole Strange locked in as the starting center and right guard, the focus has shifted to the lone vacancy at left guard. Through the early stages of offseason practices, veteran Kayode Awosika has appears to be the early leader in the competition.
Awosika has been working with the first-team offense and has taken advantage of the opportunity while several other candidates continue to adjust to new roles.
The 27-year-old arrives in Los Angeles after spending the last four seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he developed into a reliable depth piece capable of playing multiple positions along the offensive line. Originally signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2021, Awosika has continued his NFL career through versatility and consistency.
Los Angeles has also been taking a patient approach with second-round pick Jake Slaughter, as the Florida product spent his entire college career at center and has not played guard since high school.
The six-foot-four, 305-pounder earned First-Team All-American honors in 2024 and was a two-time First-Team All-SEC selection over his final two seasons, all the center position. Rather than immediately throwing him into the starting lineup, the coaching staff has been easing him into the transition. Slaughter has worked exclusively with the second-team offense as he continues to learn the nuances of the position.
The approach emphasizes the organization's desire to prioritize player development over rushing rookie's into action. While Slaughter has the physical tools and football intelligence that made him a second-round selection, making the jump from center to guard at the professional level is a large task to handle.
Another name involved in the competition is former New Orleans Saints first-round pick Trevor Penning, whom the Chargers brought back earlier this offseason on a one-year prove it deal.
However, Penning has primarily been working with the third-team and has also been getting reps in at right guard. His versatility could eventually make him a valuable depth piece, but at this point he appears to be behind Awosika and Slaughter in the battle for the starting spot.
