Veteran safety Tony Jefferson faces a looming threat as rookie speedster Genesis Smith aims to seize the starting role, signaling a ruthless youth movement in the Chargers' secondary.
The Los Angeles Chargers are in a make-or-break offseason ahead of the 2026 season. It's an offseason in which they will need to figure out how to get to the next level and improve on both sides of the football.
To get where they need to go, the Chargers can't spare feelings. Players they have always relied upon may be replaced as Los Angeles aims to upgrade across the board. That may mean one veteran star could lose his starting position next season.
The star to which we refer is Los Angeles safety Tony Jefferson, a household name for his play over several seasons in the National Football League. But time does not stop for Jefferson or anyone else, and the aging veteran might find himself the second best at his position in training camp.
ESPN NFL analyst Ben Solak discussed the likelihood that Jefferson could lose his starting spot to a rising star in the 2026 NFL season. Here's what Solak had to say about the Chargers' safety room.
"I hate to do it to Jefferson, everyone's favorite veteran at the heart of the Chargers' defense. He stepped up tremendously in 2024 (when injuries hit the safeties room) and 2025 (when the midseason trade of Alohi Gilman left a big void). But he actually retired in 2023 before returning! He's 34 years old and returned on a one-year, $2 million deal. That isn't starter money.
Jefferson was fending off only RJ Mickens last year. But in the fourth round of the 2026 draft, the Chargers added Arizona's Genesis Smith, a deep safety with speed for days. Smith simply covers far more ground than Jefferson does at this stage. While Mickens played well for a sixth-round rookie last season, Smith has superior range and ball tracking. If Smith gets the playbook under his belt quickly, it's hard to see either incumbent safety keeping him off the inside track for day one starts in the deep middle."
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ceedee Lamb (88) reaches out for extra yardage while Los Angeles Chargers safety Tony Jefferson (23) tackles him during the first quarter at AT&T Stadium. Kevin Jairaj-Imagn ImagesWhether or not benching Jefferson is a good move is still to be seen. Experience counts for something even if the safety's play has declined over the last season. Even so, there could be a real battle for the starting role with the Chargers.
Los Angeles needs to improve dramatically to catch up to the Houston Texans and New England Patriots among playoff contenders. It will look to do so over the next two months leading up to the season.
