Florida’s Jake Slaughter faces a rocky transition to the pros as analysts question his role on the interior line and his ability to secure a Week 1 start.

The Los Angeles Chargers are in need of difference makers on the interior of the offensive line. One NFL analyst predicts they may have found one in one of their rookie draft picks for 2026.

Florida rookie offensive lineman Jake Slaughter is commanding some hype heading into the year. And while not everyone is high on his ability, he does have a chance to make a real impact if he can simply prove reliable.

Despite the positive hype some may put on Slaughter, one analyst is not buying his upside for the upcoming season.

Los Angeles Chargers on SI analyst Chris Roling made Slaughter one of four bold predictions for Chargers training camp. Here's what Roling shared on Slaughter.

"Jake Slaughter was a pain point of a draft pick for Chargers fans. After years and years of terribly handling the guard spots on the offensive line, the Chargers invested a second-round pick on Slaughter…a college center.

Chargers coaches have sounded plenty confident that Slaughter can make the transition to guard in the pros quickly. The idea is he’ll lock down a starter spot by Week 1.

And yet, to start training camp, Slaughter isn’t getting first-team reps. And he’s also getting work with backups as a center. To outsiders, at least, one would think Slaughter should be taking all of the reps at guard to help his big change. Using him at center is, in a word, iffy.

There’s a reality where Slaughter struggles and either Trevor Penning or Kayode Awosika takes the starting guard spot by Week 1, which isn’t exactly encouraging or a good use of draft assets."

The reality is, the Chargers have enough potential starters that they don't necessarily need Slaughter to be one in 2026. That said, having invested a draft pick in Slaughter, many Chargers fans would like to see return on investment for the player they chose over others.

Whether Slaughter is a project or a player who will play right away is still to be seen. He should not have a ton of pressure to star right away. Even so, Los Angeles has a clear need to have a competent offensive line after a rough end to last season. If the unit performs poorly and Slaughter does not emerge as an option, many will wonder why the Chargers drafted him after all.

We will keep an eye on more Chargers news as training camp progresses.
