Los Angeles makes James Jr. the NFL’s highest-paid safety once again.

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed five-time Pro Bowl and five-time All-Pro safety Derwin James Jr. to a lucrative three-year, $75.6 million extension, making him the NFL’s highest-paid safety for the second time in his career heading into his eighth season.

The Bolts and general manager Joe Hortiz have made it clear they prioritize ensuring Derwin James Jr. finishes his career in powered blue, and this deal makes that even more of a possibility.

Keeping James Jr. in Los Angeles long term and retaining one of the league’s most versatile defensive playmakers was a no brainer for head coach Jim Harbaugh and first time defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary. It’s clear the organization views James as a foundational piece both on and off the field, and obviously he’s made his love for the city and fan base clear over the years.

This past season, James Jr. was once again named a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro at the slot cornerback position after posting 94 total tackles (50 solo), two sacks, one forced fumble, three interceptions, seven passes broken up and 7.5 stuffs. He earned an 81.2 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, which ranked ninth among 98 qualifying safeties. His coverage grade of 83.7 ranked fifth at the position, while his run-defense grade of 69.9 ranked 54th.

James Jr. allowed a 68.4 passer rating when targeted by opposing quarterbacks and surrendered 36 receptions in coverage, while also recording 71 tackles in run support and open-field situations, according to PFF.

His leadership abilities and the significance of his voice in the Chargers locker room are irreplaceable, which is evident in his five consecutive team captain selections. Additionally, James Jr. is exactly the type of leader you want mentoring fourth-round pick and former Arizona safety Genesis Smith.

This was a move that made sense for both parties, as James Jr.’s impact on the organization both on and off the field has become woven into the foundation of the franchise. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer will go down as one of the best to ever sport the Bolt on the gridiron. From his leadership within the locker room to his relentless intensity every Sunday, James Jr. has developed into the heartbeat of the Chargers defense and one of the faces of the franchise during a pivotal era for the organization. Despite coaching changes and roster turnover throughout the years, one constant has remained—you can always count on No. 3.
