Chargers safety Derwin James calls rookie Akheem Mesidor “a beast” and says he’ll become one of the league’s top edge defenders.
The Los Angeles Chargers have had precious little to celebrate during a 0-6 start that has put Jim Harbaugh’s staff under a harsh spotlight. Even so, one of the most respected voices in the locker room believes the franchise has already found a cornerstone on the edge of its defense.
Derwin James Jr., the All-Pro safety who has watched plenty of talented pass rushers come through El Segundo, didn’t hold back when asked about first-round pick Akheem Mesidor. He called the rookie “a beast” and declared that he is going to be one of the top edges in the league.
That kind of praise usually follows a breakout season, not six games of work on a winless team. James made it clear, though, that what he sees from Mesidor every day goes well beyond the box score.
The Production Is Starting to Match the Praise
It would be easy to write off James’ prediction as locker-room loyalty if the numbers didn’t support it, but Mesidor has given the Chargers a real reason for optimism.
Through the first six games, the No. 22 overall pick out of Miami has piled up 24 tackles, tying for fifth on the team. He also has 2.5 sacks, which rank second on the roster, along with five quarterback hits and a forced fumble.
Perhaps more impressively, he has done it in just 191 snaps, only the fifth-most among the team’s linebackers, so he is getting real impact out of limited playing time.
The advanced metrics paint an even rosier picture. Mesidor’s PFF grade through six games was 75.8, the highest of any Chargers defender and 21st among qualifying edge defenders across the league.
That is a remarkable standing for a player still adjusting to the speed of the professional game.
A Polished Rookie Learning From the Best
The Ottawa native arrived in Los Angeles at 25 years old with a long college career behind him, split between West Virginia and Miami.
He capped that run with 12.5 sacks for the Hurricanes in 2025 before Los Angeles made him a first-round selection in April.
Harbaugh has described his play as consistently good, high-level football, and defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary has gone so far as to call the rookie the standard for the team’s effort.
He has also benefited from landing in a position room alongside Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.
Mack has been just as complimentary as James, pointing to Mesidor’s explosiveness, his underrated tackling, and the relentless hustle he shows chasing down plays from the back side.
With Mack’s name surfacing in trade conversations ahead of the deadline, the Chargers may soon find out exactly how ready Mesidor is to carry that torch. The next chance to show it comes Sunday against the Rams at SoFi Stadium.
