After back-to-back eight-touchdown seasons, the former first-round pick faces a high-stakes crossroads as Jim Harbaugh bets on his evolution into a dynamic, game-changing cornerstone for Justin Herbert.

Quentin Johnston is no longer a secondary target. It's time to prepare for the Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver to be a top option for his team in 2026.

Johnston's career trajectory has been nothing short of promising. The former TCU wide receiver, whose Horned Frogs stunned head coach Jim Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines in the 2022 College Football Playoff Semifinal, is ready to elevate his NFL team to similar heights.

Johnston began his career with a 410-yard, two touchdown rookie season. In the next two subsequent seasons, the TCU product has gone for 700 yards and eight receiving touchdowns each time. Johnston set a career high with 735 yards and 14.4 yards per reception in 2025. Now, the NFL world is taking notice.

Enzo Flojo of Clutch Points shares that Los Angeles wide receiver Quentin Johnston is in just the right place to flourish in 2026. Here's what Flojo had to say about Johnston's breakout potential.

"No player stands to benefit more from the Chargers’ offseason changes than Quentin Johnston. That also means no player has more to lose. Johnston’s NFL career has been a study in extremes. His difficult debut season invited criticism almost immediately. To his credit, he responded by steadily improving over the next two years instead of allowing the outside noise to define him.

The progress has been real. Johnston found the end zone eight times in both 2024 and 2025 while establishing himself as a more reliable contributor in the passing game. Last season, he finished with 51 receptions for 735 yards. Those numbers suggest a player trending upward.

They also reveal why expectations remain so high. The Chargers didn’t draft Johnston merely to become a productive complementary receiver. They envisioned a dynamic, game-changing weapon. While flashes of that player have appeared, week-to-week consistency has remained elusive. The organization nevertheless doubled down on its belief by exercising Johnston’s fifth-year option. Los Angeles still believes Johnston can become a cornerstone of its offense. Now he must reward that confidence."

As NFL experts continue to discuss the pressure cooker that starting quarterback Justin Herbert has entered, Johnston appears to be experiencing the opposite phenomenon this offseason. While many look to him as a necessary breakout player, his new system is primed to facilitate another strong season for the fourth-year receiver.

How much Johnston can improve statistically is up for debate. It's not easy to continually post better numbers without regression in the NFL. The higher the numbers get, the more difficult the bar becomes to cross.

Johnston may not go for 1,000 receiving yards, especially with the improvements the Chargers have made at tight end. Still, look for the young receiver to get closer with a full season of health in new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's scheme.
