By pairing dynamic playmaker David Njoku with rising star Oronde Gadsden II and blocking specialist Charlie Kolar, Jim Harbaugh has transformed a former weakness into an elite offensive engine.

The Los Angeles Chargers tight end room has gone from a position of weakness to a strength this offseason. It is one of the more notable developments of the Chargers' 2026 offseason. It has the NFL buzzing.

Earlier this offseason, the team added solid tight end Charlie Kolar to budding star Oronde Gadsden II to help raise Los Angeles' floor and provide stability at the position.

Kolar, though known for his pass catching at the college level with Iowa State, has developed a reputation as a run blocker in the National Football League. The signing was largely viewed positively for what it was even though some questioned if it was enough on its own to upgrade the tight end room.

Then came the big signing. The Chargers added dynamic tight end David Njoku who comes in with the ability to become the No. 1 receiving target on the team. The move had one NFL analyst rank the Chargers' tight end room in his top five of the NFL.

Pro Football Sports Network's Jacob Infante ranked the Chargers tight end room No. 4 in the league. Here's what Infante reasoned about the unit.

"The foundation of Jim Harbaugh’s offense in 2026 appears to be the run game. Not only did the Los Angeles Chargers sign former Pro Bowler Alec Ingold to be their new fullback, but they also signed two quality tight ends to add to their offense. This is coming off of a 2025 season in which Oronde Gadsden II exploded as a rookie to the tune of 49 receptions and 664 receiving yards.

Gadsden figures to remain the Chargers’ top receiving threat at tight end, but the additions of Charlie Kolar and David Njoku give them one of the best tight end rooms in the NFL. Kolar is a great blocker who’s been efficient when targeted in the passing game, while Njoku is a former Pro Bowler who consistently had great receiving production before 2025."

To an outsider, Njoku is doing the heavy lifting for the tight end group. But Gadsden's 644-yard receiving season is a rarity at any stage of a tight end's career. The Chargers young star accomplished that feat in his rookie season.

The Chargers' tight end room has it all with solid run blocking, pass catching, route running and play making. They will hope to carry their offense to more success in the 2026 season.
