Each year, the NFL Players Association does a survey of active NFL players and asks them to give standard letter grades (from F- up to A+) for the team that they play for. The answers are anonymous and, because of so much movement between teams, it is assumed to be a pretty good metric for weighing teams against each other.
The best part of the survey for yours truly is that they release the overall findings. Here are the grades the 2025 Los Angeles Chargers received from the players on the roster in December:
Treatment of Families: C+
Home Game Field: C
Food/Dining Area: B+
Nutritionist/Dietician: A-
Locker Room: A-
Training Room: A-
Training Staff: A-
Weight Room: A-
Strength Coaches: B
Position Coaches: C+
Offensive Coordinator: D-
Defensive Coordinator: A+
Special Teams Coordinator: A-
Team Travel: B-
Head Coach: C+
General Manager: B+
Team Ownership: A-
Some of these answers feel a bit built-in for the Chargers, who play in the league's newest stadium (SoFi Stadium) and likely practice and train in the league's newest facility (The Bolt). I imagine that is where a lot of those grades for training room, weight room and locker room come in.
An A- for team ownership is, honestly, a bit shocking. I could maybe attribute that to the new stadium/facility as well, but I'll give Dean Spanos the benefit of the doubt and say that perhaps he is better behind closed doors than we've been led to believe.
Jim Harbaugh getting just a C+ as the team's head coach feels low, but he's also 62 years old and is known to be a bit tough on his players. I could see that rubbing some players the wrong way.
The most notable, and lowest, grade was for offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Since this is the NFL, and guys will definitely look the other way if you're good at your job, I'm going to assume that the players had lost faith in his system by this point. That also helps to explain why he was let go after the loss to the New England Patriots in the playoffs.
It's probably worth noting that, in the midst of a really terrible season, the Miami Dolphins gave then-head coach Mike McDaniel a B grade.
The most terrifying, and highest, Chargers grade was for defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Terrifying only because he is no longer with the team, having taken the Baltimore Ravens head coaching position, which takes away a point of connection between the organization and players that was quite obviously working.
Finally, I do find the C for "home game field" to be curious. It's possible that they're literally talking about the condition of the turf (Rams players also gave their team a C for the same category). It's also possible, and has occasionally been commented on by members of the team, that this is the players' way of being frustrated by the (lack of) support they hear from Chargers fans at home games.
