Earlier today, newly (officially) named Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel (along with his glasses and leather jacket) joined The Pat McAfee Show.
The interview, which also included former Green Bay Packers LB A.J. Hawk, was absolutely plagued with internet issues that derailed most of McDaniel's answers, but let's see if we can't get anything useful out of it...
Pat says that Mike McDaniel always looks cool. What goes into his wardrobe decisions? “I just dress because you need clothes, so I put them on.”
McDaniel was asked about his time in Miami as the head coach of the Dolphins: “You spend a lot of time preparing for the opportunity and then you get in there and figure out there’s a lot of little things that go into it that you can’t plan for.”
How did he land on taking an OC job instead of continuing to interview for HC openings? This was the first time he’s had multiple opportunities and he sat with each one of them before making his decision. “For me to be my best self, I wanted to go after something that felt right. Realistically, I wanted some players that I wanted to coach.”
Is he excited to coach with Jim Harbaugh? “I’m about to get off this interview and go buy some Dockers because I’m so all-in on Coach Harbaugh.”
McDaniel is excited to work outside of the Shanahan-system because that’s when “you get epiphanies that you don’t even know you were looking for.”
McAfee and his crew obviously got a tour of the Chargers facility at some point and won’t shut up about it. They tried to rope McDaniel into talking about the full pizza oven or the golf simulator and he tried his best to play along.
In responding to a question about how he will use the Chargers offense to attack defenses, McDaniel talked about how much he loves being a coach in the NFL because he can feel the ebb & flow of different trends as one team figures out something that works and then everyone follows until offenses (or defenses) adjust and then it starts all over again.
McDaniel, who is obviously still proud of his Dolphins scoring 70 points on the Denver Broncos a few years ago, was asked if there was anything he wasn’t able to use in Miami that he’s looking forward to trying out with the Chargers offense. “There are a lot of skillsets here to be utilized. A lot of talented players. There’s uncharted stuff on the horizon but we need to walk before we can run.”
