The edge rushers status could give Akheem Mesidor an earlier opportunity to make his mark.
The Los Angeles Chargers will have to wait a bit longer to find out whether one of their most important defenders will be available for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
Edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu has officially been listed as questionable with a hip injury after being limited throughout the entire week of practice.
While being limited all week is not necessarily an indication that Tuipulotu will miss the game, his questionable designation means the Bolts have to prepare for the possibility of playing without him.
If Tuipulotu is unable to suit up, it could create an opportunity that Akheem Mesidor has been waiting for.
The No. 22 overall pick in the draft was already expected to have a role in the Chargers' pass-rush rotation this season. Defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary praised the rookie throughout training camp, and now the rookie has a chance to prove he means business. The possibility of using him alongside both Tuipulotu and Khalil Mack on passing downs could be a big boost for the defense this season.
That said, if Tuipulotu is unavailable, Mesidor could suddenly find himself playing a much larger role than initially expected in his NFL debut.
There is a major difference between having a rotational role and being counted on to replace a player who recorded 13 sacks and 70 quarterback pressures last season. Tuipulotu was one of the Chargers' most productive defensive players in 2025, making his potential absence a significant one.
But this could also be the perfect opportunity for Mesidor.
Rather than easing into the league with limited opportunities, the rookie could immediately be thrown into a significant role against an Arizona offense that will be without Kyler Murray for the first time since they selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019.
Even if Tuipulotu is cleared to play, Mesidor should still have an opportunity to make an impact. The Chargers have been clear that they want to utilize his skill set, and rotating him into the game could give Los Angeles another explosive pass-rushing threat.
However, if Tuipulotu ultimately cannot suit up, the spotlight becomes much brighter.
Mesidor has already shown the Chargers what he can do in practice. Now, he could have an opportunity to show the rest of the league.
For a first-round pick with plenty of expectations, an early opportunity could be exactly what Mesidor needs to begin establishing himself as a major piece of the Chargers' defense and a future franchise cornerstone.
