The rookie receiver continues to impress teammates and coaches during his first training camp.
Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Brenen Thompson has quickly become one of the biggest stories of training camp, drawing praise from coaches and teammates as he looks to carve out a role in a crowded receiver room.
Thompson arrived in Los Angeles with a reputation as one of the fastest players in the 2026 NFL Draft class after posting an impressive 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the combine. While his speed has been on full display, those around the organization say his work ethic and professionalism have been equally impressive.
The 23-year-old made it clear that his focus extends well beyond simply catching passes.
"Absolutely. I came here to contribute [and] to make this team better, and so whether that's blocking, running, special teams—whatever it is—I'm going to put my best foot forward," Thompson said.
That team-first mentality has resonated throughout the building.
New Bolts offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said Thompson has "captured the attention of the quarterback room" during camp, while emphasizing that the rookie's preparation has been what stands out most.
"His professional approach has stood out," McDaniel said. "The most impressive part has been his professional attack and ownership of assignment."
Fellow receiver Quentin Johnston has also noticed Thompson's impact since arriving in Los Angeles.
"He came in with one thing on his mind—speed," Johnston said. "Shoot, you've seen his 40 time, seen what he did in college. He's brought that to the league, to this team."
Johnston added that Thompson has proven to be much more than just a track athlete.
"On the field, he shows his speed, shows his ball-catching abilities, stuff like that," Johnston said. "He's been a fun guy to be around."
Thompson isn't shy about acknowledging what separates him from most defenders.
"I know my speed is pretty much unmatched when I step out on the field," he said.
Ironically, despite making a name for himself with his elite speed, Thompson admitted he doesn't actually enjoy running.
"I really hate running, but I'm really good at it," he said.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has liked what he's seen from the rookie through the early stages of camp.
"We're all seeing the same thing," Harbaugh said. "Much like Akheem [Mesidor], so far so good."
Perhaps the most encouraging endorsement came from franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, whose opinion carries significant weight as the leader of this team. Herbert believes Thompson has already shown he belongs and expects him to become an important contributor.
"He's gonna be very good," Herbert said. "We saw it early on that he was gonna be. He's skilled. He's fast. He's gonna make a lot of plays for us."
With his speed stretching defenses vertically and his willingness to contribute on special teams and in the run game, Thompson is giving himself every opportunity to earn playing time as a rookie. If his early training camp performance is any indication, the Bolts may have found much more than a speed specialist in the explosive first-year receiver.
