Should the Chargers add Peter Woods?

Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods was viewed as a top prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft before the season, but has dropped down draft boards after a disappointing campaign. Regardless of this, he’s an intriguing option for the Los Angeles Chargers. His superb athleticism and tools give him a high-upside player, and he would help instantly elevate the Chargers' defensive line. ESPN Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. recognized this in his recent mock draft and selected the dynamic force at pick 22.

Woods isn’t the premier option for the Chargers in round one. They are reportedly keen on Penn State guard Vega Ioane, but he was drafted the pick before in this scenario. As a result, Jim Harbaugh and company had to pivot, and the defensive tackle is arguably the top option.

The production won’t show it, but Woods is a fantastic, impactful player

Woods only tallied 14 pressures, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks in 2025, but the film tells another story. He’s constantly in the backfield, either making plays or driving the ball carrier into a teammate's arms. This ability is evident as both a run defender and a pass rusher.

Kiper mentions this in his suburb following the selection and notices his fit in the Chargers defense.

“The Chargers signed Dalvin Tomlinson, but he’s 32 years old. Woods could be a long-term fixture at 3-technique,” Kiper wrote. “He’s as strong as they come, and he’d help plug the middle against the run and try to tap into his pass-rushing potential as he gets acclimated to the pros.”

As Kiper eluded to, Woods will be an impactful presence against the run immediately. He has violent hand usage, which helps him easily stack and shed opposing linemen. He has a blazing first step and can frequently beat blockers to their spot, thus splitting the block.

Additionally, Woods has immense pass-rushing upside. He still needs to develop more pass rush moves - as he relies purely on his athleticism too often - but has shown a willingness to implement them. A defensive line coach will see Woods and believe they can develop him into a superstar.

Overall, Peter Woods isn't seen as a top prospect for the Chargers, but he would be a fantastic selection if Vega Ioane is unavailable. His otherworldly athleticism, prowess against the run, and potential as a pass rusher make him an enticing selection. Woods would be a franchise cornerstone for Jim Harbaugh and help elevate the defense to new heights.
