Could These Two Free Agents Be an Option for the Chargers? cover image

Two of the four players Miami released on Monday could address needs for Los Angeles.

Two of the biggest needs for the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason are in the trenches along the interior of the offensive line and at edge rusher. Fortunately for them, two of the four players released by the Miami Dolphins today are veteran guard James Daniels and veteran pass rusher Bradley Chubb.

OG James Daniels

James Daniels would be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Chargers, who are looking to upgrade the interior of the offensive line. He’s had two consecutive seasons cut short by injuries but still has a proven history of success.

The 28-year-old played just one game for the Dolphins after signing a three-year, $24 million deal with the team last offseason. He suffered a significant pectoral injury in Miami’s Week 1 loss to the Indianapolis Colts that caused him to miss the remainder of the season.

In 2024, Daniels appeared in just four games for the Pittsburgh Steelers after tearing his Achilles in the same stadium against the Colts. He started in 16 games for the Steelers in 2023, including the Wild Card round, allowing just one sack and giving up 24 total pressures. In 2022, he started all 17 games for Pittsburgh, conceding zero sacks and 20 pressures.

Daniels was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, where he spent four seasons. During his time in Chicago, he allowed just four sacks and 89 total pressures, though he did have some discipline issues, committing 17 penalties.

EDGE Bradley Chubb

With Khalil Mack and Odafe Oweh set to become free agents this offseason, two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Bradley Chubb could be a key veteran signing for the Chargers if either of the two is not retained.

Chubb recorded 48 total pressures, eight sacks, 22 stops, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for Miami in 2025. He did not appear in any games in 2024 as he recovered from a torn ACL, meniscus and patellar tendon sustained in Week 17 of the 2023 season.

Prior to his injury, Chubb appeared in 16 games for Miami in 2023, posting a career-high 88.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, along with an 84.9 pass-rush grade and an 88.5 coverage grade. He recorded 70 total pressures, 13 sacks, 39 stops, two fumble recoveries and tied for the league lead with six forced fumbles.

The former first-round pick of the Denver Broncos was traded to Miami in the middle of the 2022 season, during which he accumulated 54 total pressures, 10 sacks, 25 stops and five forced fumbles in 15 games (eight with Denver, seven with Miami). During his four full seasons in Denver, Chubb recorded 134 total pressures, 22 sacks, 84 stops, one interception, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
