Los Angeles could target the cornerback if he’s still available on Day 2 of the draft.

With former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Benjamin St-Juste heading to the Green Bay Packers on a two-year, $10 million deal with $3 million guaranteed, the Bolts could be in the market for reinforcements in the secondary and may look to address the need on Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

That said, Indiana star CB D'Angelo Ponds would make plenty of sense as a target, though Los Angeles may need to move up from pick No. 55 to land him depending on how the board falls.

The 22-year-old Miami, FL native spent his freshman season at James Madison in 2023, recording 52 total tackles (33 solo), 12 passes defended and two interceptions while earning second-team All-Sun Belt honors.

Ponds transferred to Indiana in 2024, where his career took off. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after posting 55 total tackles (35 solo), nine passes defended and three interceptions in his first season with the Hoosiers.

This past season, Ponds was named a first-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection while helping lead Indiana to a national championship. He also earned Rose Bowl Defensive Player of the Game and Peach Bowl Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors.

Ponds tallied 60 total tackles (43 solo), 10 passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble as a junior. His 88.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus ranked eighth among 897 qualifying cornerbacks, while his 89.6 coverage grade ranked seventh and his 78.2 run defense grade ranked 161st. Ponds allowed just a 42.0 passer rating when targeted and surrendered only 18 receptions in coverage.

After recently attending the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Ponds measured in at five-foot-nine, 182 pounds with 29 3/8-inch arms and 9 5/8-inch hands. The only drill he participated in was the vertical jump, where he posted a 43.5-inch mark.

At Indiana’s Pro Day on April 1, Ponds ran an unofficial 4.31-second 40-yard dash, which would have ranked as the fastest among cornerbacks at the combine.

NFL analyst Lance Zierlein gave Ponds the pro comparison of Washington Commanders second-round pick Mike Sainristil due to his competitiveness and ability to impact the game despite his smaller frame. Ponds plays with strong discipline and has the speed to keep up with vertical threats while consistently disrupting passes at the catch point. He’s also a willing and reliable tackler who gets downhill against the run, adding value beyond coverage.

Ponds’ skill set would make him a strong fit for the Chargers. He offers versatility as a defender who can match up against shifty slot receivers, while his physicality and special teams impact add another dimension to Los Angeles’ secondary.
