Mahomes' potential return and a resurgent AFC West create a daunting path ahead for the Chargers in 2026.
The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a relatively successful 2025 season, despite the franchise's year ending in the Wild Card round with another embarrassing postseason loss. The group faced a ton of adversity during the year when it came to injuries, and the fact that the Chargers were able to finish the year with a record of 11-6 and a playoff birth was remarkable.
A big reason Los Angeles had a good amount of success in the regular season, even with all its injuries, was the Kansas City Chiefs' downfall. The Chiefs were never the same team that they were in past years during the 2025 season, and things got even worse as Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL near the end of the year. He has approached his rehab with a positive and motivated attitude, but the timing of his knee injury makes his status for the start of the 2026 season questionable.
Mahomes has always been a competitor, but a serious knee injury at the end of a season is not ideal. It doesn't matter how motivated and competitive he is; it will be difficult to get back on the field for Week 1 of the 2026 season. The quarterback recently said that things are going well, and he is planning to be under center for Week 1.
This would make things hard for the Chargers, especially if the Chiefs get back to where they were before 2025. Kansas City would need to have a great offseason, but that is certainly possible. Competing in a division with the Chiefs and the Denver Broncos, who are set to play in the AFC Championship Game, is not going to be easy. The Chargers were able to go 2-0 against a struggling Kansas City team in 2025, and Los Angeles was 1-1 against Denver with the loss being meaningless as it came in Week 18.
Competing for the AFC West crown in 2026 won't be easy, and it will be a bloodbath as all three teams fight for positioning in the division and the AFC playoffs. The Las Vegas Raiders could also make some noise as the franchise holds the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and drafting the right quarterback can change everything around for a franchise.
Hopefully, Los Angeles isn't as down on its luck as it was in 2025. Health will be key for the Chargers, and a successful offseason is necessary to take the next step towards becoming a serious contender in the conference.
