With Jefferson now on the roster, he should be firmly in the safety rotation, which includes Derwin James Jr., Elijah Molden, RJ Mickens, and now Tony Jefferson heading into the 2026 season.
During the 2025 season, Jefferson totaled 57 tackles, one tackle for loss, seven pass breakups, and four interceptions. Looking at Jefferson's stats, he was able to make an impact all over the field whether it was in the run game or in the pass game.
In addition to Jefferson's overall statistics, he graded out very well with PFF as he was one of the more consistent safeties in the NFL during the 2025 season.
Throughout last season, Jefferson received an overall grade of 70.3 (No. 24 among 98 safeties in the NFL), a coverage grade of 71.9 (No. 23 among 98 safeties in the NFL), and a run defense grade of 59.7 (No. 83 among 98 safeties in the NFL).
Clearly, Jefferson has shown the ability to make an impact on defense, especially in coverage, and while his run defense grade was on the lower end, the physicality he brings is something that cannot be measured and was put on full display last season.
One game that stood out was when the Chargers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs on the road as Jefferson delivered big hits on the receivers all game long.
Even though Jefferson was initially cut, the fact that he is on the roster now is a good sign and proves that he is a reliable veteran whom the Chargers would like to keep around.
Now, looking at the safety depth, based on the Chargers wanting to initially cut Jefferson, that could mean rookie safety Genesis Smith has very much impressed the coaching staff and looks to be in a position to contribute as soon as this season.
While Smith is a rookie, defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary has talked in the past about Smith developing well and showing promise that he could contribute on the defense at some point soon, and that he has a very promising ceiling.
Other players seeming to be progressing well in the safety room include Elijah Molden and RJ Mickens, who have been able to gain more experience and should get even better throughout the 2026 season.
The Chargers' decision to bring back Jefferson was probably one of the more interesting moves that happened today. However, since Jefferson is now back on the roster, he should be able to make a key impact in the secondary and help O'Leary to develop the young safeties that Los Angeles has to ensure this defense has reliable depth and can continue to be one of the top defensive units in the entire NFL.
