The Los Angeles Chargers have put together their initial 53-man roster, and at least for now, they will bring 11 offensive linemen into the regular season.

The Los Angeles Chargers, just like the rest of the NFL, have put together their initial 53-man roster with the regular season just around the corner.

Looking at the roster, there is one area the Chargers took a unique approach with, which was the offensive line, as they will have 11 offensive linemen on the roster to start the regular season, unless there are any changes.

As far as the offensive line goes, the Chargers did a solid job of putting together a collection of players that provide solid depth at tackle, guard, and center while also having a few players who have solid positional flexibility.

At offensive tackle, the Chargers chose to bring starters Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, in addition to backups Trey Pipkins III, Travis Burke, and Logan Taylor.

For the guard position, Los Angeles brought on Kayode Awosika and Cole Strange, who are the projected starters, as well as Alex Harkey and Trevor Penning.

Then, to fill in at center, the Chargers have decided to go with rookie Jake Slaughter, who will start, and rookie Jacob Spomer to serve as the backup.

On another note, the Chargers have placed guard Branson Taylor on Injured Reserve (Designated to Return) so he will have to miss the first four games, but he should be back at some point so it will be interesting to see how that affects the rest of the depth chart.

Additionally, as most know, Tyler Biadasz has been placed on season-ending Injured Reserve with a major ACL injury, so he will be out the entirety of 2026 and will hopefully be able to contribute in 2027.

Now, let's take a look at each position on the offensive line to evaluate how the depth looks heading into the regular season.

Starting with tackle, the Chargers took a very aggressive approach as they have five tackles on this 53-man roster in Alt, Slater, Pipkins, Burke, and Logan Taylor. However after last season that makes a lot of sense as after Slater and Alt went down, Los Angeles struggled to find consistent answers at either tackle spot which led to 32 different offensive line combinations.

To no surprise, Alt and Slater will start, but if one of them goes down, it will most likely be Pipkins or Burke stepping in to fill the spot with their flexibility. As for Logan Taylor, he actually has the flexibility to play guard and tackle, so he may be used in situations where more changes have to happen; nonetheless, he is a great piece to have to complete the tackle depth.

At guard, it seems like Awosika will start on the left side and Strange should be starting on the right side, so it will be interesting to see how they each perform. Throughout camp, Awosika and Strange have had their ups and downs, but as long as they can provide consistent protection for quarterback Justin Herbert, this offense should be in a great spot.

After that, the Chargers have Harkey and Penning, who should be able to provide solid depth if they need to step in. Penning in particular should be great, as he also has the ability to play tackle and guard, just like Logan Taylor, which puts Los Angeles in a great spot when it comes to their depth at tackle and guard.

Lastly, looking at the center position, the Chargers will start Slaughter, and while he is a rookie, he has been learning a lot throughout camp. Alt actually talked about Slaughter doing all the right things, which speaks volumes and could be a great sign for this offensive line.

For backup center, the Chargers have decided to go with Spomer who has also has had a solid camp. The main reason Spomer made the team is because Biadasz got hurt which us definitely a tough situation for Biadasz as he was in line to start. However, even though Biadasz is hurt he could serve as a great mentor for Slaughter and Spomer to learn from which may put this offensive line in a great position throughout the 2026 season.

Overall, it seems that the Chargers have done a solid job at creating depth up front at tackle, guard, and center, which could help this offensive unit to accomplish great things of the offensive line is healthy and Herbert is consistently protected.
