The Los Angeles Chargers have received more tough news following the designation for offensive tackle Rashawn Slater.
The Los Angeles Chargers and head coach Jim Harbaugh suffered a tough loss on Sunday afternoon to the Seattle Seahawks by a final score of 30-23, which puts the Chargers in a very tough position heading into Week 5.
Additionally, the Chargers received some news on offensive tackle Rashawn Slater. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, based on the initial exams, it is believed that Slater has a high ankle sprain. Rapoport said Slater will have an MRI in the morning, but even if it just confirms this injury, that is something that will take a couple of weeks to heal.
With that news, it is clear that the Chargers are in a very rough spot, especially when it comes to the offensive line.
Other injuries to the offensive line include offensive tackle Joe Alt exiting yesterday with a neck injury and left guard Trevor Penning leaving the game with a head injury. Additionally, starting left guard Kayode Awosika has been out with a fibula injury, and another left guard option, Trey Pipkins III, has been placed on IR with a knee injury.
Before the season, center Tyler Biadasz was ruled out with major damage to his ACL, which was the start of the injury problems on the Los Angeles offensive line.
At this point, Los Angeles is in a very rough spot when it comes to having more players to go to on the offensive line, as yesterday they had undrafted free agent Jacob Spomer go in at center, rookie Jake Slaughter move to left guard, rookie Travis Burke go in at right tackle, and at left tackle the Chargers put in rookie Logan Taylor.
Based on all that movement, quarterback Justin Herbert was once again behind an offensive line that was full of inexperienced players because most of the starting lineup was out due to injury.
The only starter on the offensive line who was able to finish the game was right guard Cole Strange, however he struggled throughout the day and has not really been able to perform well to start the 2026 season.
Overall, the offense under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who is in his first year with the Chargers, has struggled a lot, and these injuries to the offensive line are going to make matters even more difficult.
Moving forward, it will be interesting to get updates on Slater, Alt, Penning, and Awosika to hear about what their timelines for return may be, as if they all have to miss significant time this team may truly be at risk of having a catastrophic season when the expectations were much higher than that.
