Chargers rookie safety Genesis Smith intercepted Josh Allen twice in the first half of Week 3, giving the winless Los Angeles Chargers a bright spot ahead of Seattle.
Three weeks into 2026, the Los Angeles Chargers are still waiting on their first win, but in Buffalo on Sunday, they got the clearest sign yet that help is on the way.
Coming from a fourth-round rookie most fans weren't talking about in August, Genesis Smith picked off Josh Allen twice before halftime, and the rookie safety earned both.
First Pick
The first came on Buffalo's third drive, with the Bills facing first-and-20. Smith read Allen from the moment the ball left his hand, broke hard, and timed his leap perfectly for the first interception of his NFL career.
It was the kind of play his draft profile promised. Ball skills were Smith's calling card coming out, and he wasted no time proving the scouting reports right.
Second Pick
Allen went deep for DJ Moore, the kind of throw that has burned defenses for years. Smith was right there, matching Moore step for step, tracking the ball over his shoulder and wrestling it away on the ground.
That's a rookie winning a one-on-one against an elite arm on a vertical shot.
Smith is now the first Chargers rookie with a multi-interception game since Tarheeb Still did it against Atlanta in December 2024. Still turned that breakout into a real role in this secondary, and Smith looks like he could follow the same path.
Jim Harbaugh addressed the 0-3 start and went out of his way to praise his rookie, fitting the message Harbaugh has been preaching all week: this roster has the right players to turn things around.
Going Forward With Season
That matters because the 2026 Chargers are a team in transition. Mike McDaniel is still building chemistry with Justin Herbert, and the offense hasn't found a consistent footing yet. A defense that takes the ball away buys that process time.
Turnovers mean short fields, extra possessions, and margin for error, all things this team has lacked through three weeks. The hard part starts now. Every defensive coordinator in the league has film of Smith jumping routes, and every offensive coordinator will try to use that aggressiveness against him.
Expect double moves, play-action shots, and pump fakes aimed right at No. 1 on the rookie's scouting report. How he adjusts will tell us whether Sunday was a breakout or just a great afternoon.
Seattle comes next in Week 4. The Chargers need a win, and they need their young playmakers to keep showing up.
In a season that's started with more questions than answers, Genesis Smith just gave Los Angeles one answer it can build on.
