NFL insider Adam Schefter provides an injury update on Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
The Los Angeles Chargers did not perform well on Sunday afternoon as they were upset by the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 26-14, and in addition to that, wide receiver Ladd McConkey was injured.
As far as the injury goes, McConkey was trying to catch a pass in the third quarter as he took a shot to the ribs from Cardinals defender Mack Wilson Jr., and after that McConkey did not retun to the game.
On that note, NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update on McConkey on X, which mentioned that McConkey is dealing with a rib injury and will be day-to-day. Schefter also added that the Chargers want to see how McConkey feels before making a decision on his status.
With the news Schefter reported, it appears the Chargers have avoided disaster when it comes to McConkey, as he is one of the best offensive weapons for quarterback Justin Herbert and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and will be a critical piece of this offense moving forward.
McConkey being a key piece of this offense as put on display in a big way in this game as he tallied five receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown. When McConkey was on the field, he seemed to be a favorite target of Herbert and moving forward is very likely that will continue as long as he can stay healthy.
Other than McConkey, Herbert was able to connect with a few different pass catchers between his tight ends and receivers.
For the tight ends, Njoku hauled in five passes for 58 yards and Gadsden caught three passes for 32 yards.
As far as the receivers go, Tre' Harris had three receptions for 20 yards, and then Quentin Johnston had two receptions for 17 yards. Additionally, Derius Davis was targeted one time but was unable to make the catch.
Without McConkey, it appears that the Chargers do struggle at least a little bit when it comes to getting the receivers involved in the passing game.
In particular, Johnston struggled to get involved while being one of the top options for Los Angeles, so he must figure out a way to become more of a staple in the passing game heading into Week 2.
So, as the Chargers head into Week 2, it would be ideal if McConkey is available to help the passing game get on track, but if he is not, Los Angeles will need Johnston and the rest of the pass catchers to step up to ensure this passing attack can be productive against the Las Vegas Raiders.
