Chargers' draft strategy and emerging talent cast doubt on Keenan Allen's future. Younger receivers are poised to take the field, potentially leaving a legend behind.
I'm starting to seriously doubt that the Los Angeles Chargers have plans to bring WR Keenan Allen back to the team in 2026. I suppose I should explain why...
The 2025 Chargers carried six WRs on their roster. Keenan Allen was one of them. The 2026 version of the team has five of those same players still on the roster, while news spreads that the teams has been inviting 1st round WRs to town to meet with the team and rumors swirl about the team's interest in free agent WRs like Jauan Jennings.
Also, as I've laid out previously, I think the team bringing back Keenan Allen in 2025 was a good thing for the team but potentially bad for the development of Ladd McConkey. It's not so much that they play the same position, Allen played on the outside more often than the slot and McConkey was the opposite, but they have a similar game that is predicated upon getting open early underneath. Sometimes, having two of those guys can make things crowded.
Privately, the Chargers have been shopping Quentin Johnston in a trade. That's a sign that they're looking for a WR1 that can stretch the field and create more underneath openings, which would benefit someone like McConkey tremendously.
Keeping Keenan Allen in that mix would only work to keep 2025 2nd round pick Tre Harris off the field, stunting his development and lighting that investment on fire. Add in Oronde Gadsden as another underneath receiving threat from the TE position, and you can see why it might be difficult for Keenan Allen to get off the bench for the 2026 Chargers.
And, honestly, Keenan showed last year that he's still a great WR at 33-years old (he'll be 34 by time next season starts). I know the year he spent in Chicago was bad enough that he came back to the Chargers as quickly as he could, but I would bet on him finding a new home in 2026 and the Chargers WR depth chart looking something like....
WR1 (X-receiver): TBD (Quentin Johnston staying is the backup plan)
WR2 (Z-receiver): Ladd McConkey
WR3 (slot WR): Tre Harris
TE: Oronde Gadsden
Assuming the team can find itself a WR1 (and, I love Keenan, but it's not him), there's just no place in this offense for Allen without him blocking the way of younger players that the team is heavily invested in.
All of that being said, Keenan Allen is a massive success story for the Chargers. They drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL Draft and he currently leads the team all-time in receptions. He's about 530 receiving yards away from leading the team all-time in that category too (Antonio Gates is 1st), and he's topped that mark in every healthy season he's played in the NFL.
So, the Chargers are left with a franchise-defining question. Do they bring back Keenan Allen and let him get more team records at the expense of playing time for younger WRs with higher ceilings, or do they let him walk out the door and tell him to come back when he's ready for the one-day retirement contract?
I guess we'll find out soon enough.
