Throughout the offseason, Los Angeles Chargers rookie center Jake Slaughter has been solid, and offensive coordinator McDaniel offers more insight as to why that is.

The Los Angeles Chargers have an opportunity to start the 2026 season 1-0 as they take on the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

With that, there will be some interesting aspects to watch, which include the performances of rookies, and there is one rookie in particular for the Chargers who could be very intriguing to monitor, and that is rookie center Jake Slaughter.

Throughout training camp and the preseason, Slaughter has been impressive, and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has talked about that and the fact that he has been impressed with Slaughter's performance thus far.

On that note, during Thursday's media availability, McDaniel provided even more insight on Slaughter and what has truly made the rookie's performance so impressive heading into Week 1.

"The reason why I'm excited about Jake is not because of avoiding a negative play. A rookie first NFL game, there's going to be something that he doesn't like. What I love about Jake is that he stand he's positioned to have his best play in the game after he's something bad happens. He responds well to adversity," McDaniel said.

As McDaniel said, Slaughter does a great job of being able to respond from adversity, and as a rookie there is no question that there will be plenty of opportunities to do that.

With Slaughter now being the starting center for the Chargers, he has to be at his best each and every week, especially because he will be playing against some elite athletes on the defensive line.

Heading into the season opener, Slaughter will be facing the Cardinals and a solid duo of Roy Lopez and Walter Nolen III. So, with Slaughter making his first start it's going to be very interesting to see how he can handle the Arizona defensive tackles in the run game as well as in pass protection.

With the mindset Slaughter has in terms of being able to respond from adversity, regardless of what happens on Sunday, the Chargers will be able to rely on Slaughter to do his job because they know he will have a short memory and move onto the next play which is exactly what he needs to do in order to have success in the NFL.

Diving deeper into the mental aspect of the game, Slaughter must be on the same page with quarterback Justin Herbert to ensure that the offensive line makes the correct blocks and that the snap count is what it is supposed to be, among other things.

As the center, Slaughter is essentially the quarterback of the offensive line, and he must make the right calls when it comes to blitz pickup, run blocking assignments for the entire offensive line, and any changes that he or Herbert wants to make pre-snap.

With that understanding, the fact that Slaughter has such a strong mind and the ability to forget about the bad plays is such an advantage for the Chargers and should help this team to run the offense effectively in the first regular season game with McDaniel as the offensive coordinator.

So, heading into the season opener against the Cardinals, it will be interesting to watch how Slaughter performs as well as how he handles adversity, and if he does perform well and limits the rookie mistakes, the Chargers should be in a great position to start the 2026 season off with a victory.
