Ladd McConkey missed Thursday's practice with a foot injury. Losing the Chargers' top receiver against Seattle's elite defense would be a major blow.
Of all the names that could pop up on the Los Angeles Chargers' injury report, Ladd McConkey's might be the one that makes Bolts fans wince the most.
The third-year receiver sat out Thursday's practice with a foot injury after logging a limited session on Wednesday. A step backward like that late in the week is never a great sign, and it leaves his availability for Sunday's trip to Seattle very much up in the air.
For a Chargers offense that has spent the first three weeks searching for an identity, that uncertainty is a gut punch.
McConkey has been the one thing L.A. could count on. His 12 catches and 183 receiving yards both lead the team, and the numbers only tell part of the story.
He's the receiver who gets open when a play starts to break down, and the go-to weapon Hernert looks to on third down when the call has to work.
Facing Seattle in Week 4
Seattle enters Week 4 ranked first in the NFL in total yards allowed and passing yards allowed, and third in scoring defense. That's not a unit you can just try to beat with your second and third options.
Devon Witherspoon, a three-time Pro Bowler, and Josh Jobe give Seattle a pair of corners who love to get physical at the line and make receivers earn every inch.
Sam Darnold has played with poise and consistency, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is playing at a level that has him in the conversation for best receiver in the league.
Short possessions on one end mean extended exposure to that duo on the other, and that math rarely works out for the visiting team.
McConkey Possibly Out
Without McConkey's quickness and route savvy to stress that coverage, the Chargers' remaining wideouts would be facing a brutal one-on-one test.
Losing him against the league's stingiest pass defense could leave the offense stuck in neutral for four quarters.
It also puts the Chargers' defense in a bind. If L.A. can't string together long drives, it will hand the ball back to a Seattle attack with plenty of firepower.
There was at least a sliver of good news Thursday, with defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe returning to practice on a limited basis. Still, the biggest storyline for Los Angeles is clearly McConkey's foot.
If he plays, the Chargers have a puncher's chance at stealing one in Seattle. If he doesn't, it's hard to see where the points come from.
