As Patrick Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid isn't even thinking of succession plans at the QB position.
The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2026 NFL season hoping for a return to the playoffs after missing the postseason in 2025.
As training camp has gotten underway, there are plenty of storylines in Kansas City. Eric Bieniemy is back as the offensive coordinator, although his wife was unfortunately shot recently.
Bieniemy took time away from the team before making his return, but having him back as the OC is a breath of fresh air for the offense.
Another big storyline is tight end Travis Kelce, who appears to be suiting up for his final season of his storied NFL career.
And, there is superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who missed the end of the season after suffering a torn ACL. So far, Mahomes has looked decent, and there are positive signs to him being ready for Week 1.
During training camo, Andy Reid was asked if he thinks about the team's future at the QB position, although the Chiefs coach doesn't seem worried one bit, and it's because he doesn't even think he will still be in Kansas City.
“I don’t worry about it because he’ll be here a lot longer than I am," Reid said via team transcript obtained from Kevin Patra of NFL.com.
Reid is under contract through 2029, although retirement rumors have swirled around him time and time again, especially with the head coach set to turn 70 years old soon.
Mahomes, on the other hand, will be 31 in September, although he has still shown plenty of promise. Quarterbacks have also been playing well into their late 30s, and Tom Brady played in his 40s, so who knows how long Mahomes plays.
In a hypothetical situation, if Mahomes plays another seven seasons, he will be 38, and Reid will be in his mid-70s.
Reid quickly shot down any retirement buzz at the end of the 2025 regular season.
“I think I’m coming back, right?” Reid said. “If they’ll have me back, I’ll come back. You never know in this business. That’s a tough one, but I plan on it, yeah.”
Right now, there is no need for Kansas City to think of the future at the QB position, even though Mahomes is coming off of a serious injury.
And, it makes sense why Reid isn't thinking about it, because there is a strong chance that he calls it a career after his contract expires at the end of the 2029 season.
