Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid owns the Raiders at their home field, and he'd love to maintain his edge.
When the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium and take the field on Sunday, coach Andy Reid will have some pretty unique bragging rights, according to a report from Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
Reid is the most successful coach in NFL history at Allegiant, per the writer. Reid is 6-1 at Allegiant Stadium, and he also won Super Bowl LVIII. The Chiefs have beaten the Raidesr five of the six times they’ve played there, and that puts Reid in a tie for the most wins of any head coach at Allegiant Stadium.
Moreover, if the Chiefs beat the Raiders on Sunday, Reid will have his seventh win in Las Vegas and have first place all to himself. When Reid was informed of this fact, his reaction was “I didn’t know that and I don’t really care.”
That’s probably not true behind the scenes, and for all we know Reid may be using his winning history at Allegiant to fire up the troops. The Chiefs lost their final game of last season to the Raiders on the road, and Reid has talked off and on about how much he hated putting the kind of bad football Kansas City played that day on the field.
Regardless of how Reid really feels about this, though, it is a remarkable record that speaks to the difference between these two franchises and their recent history.
Smith noted that the Raiders have had a half dozen coaches in Las Vegas, and only Klint Kubiak is above .500 at 1-0 at the moment. Listing the others is painful, starting with Jon Gruden at 4-7, Rich Bisaccia going 3-3, Josh McDaniels checking out at 6-7, Antonio Pierce at 6-8, and Pete Carroll putting the cherry on top last year at 2-7.
Whether Klint Kubiak uses this as a talking point is debatable, however. Kubiak is a straight-laced sort, and he tends to be low key and focused on being in the moment.
He’s already got the game ball from his first win tucked deep in his closet so it doesn’t become a distraction, and he seems like one of the few NFL coaches who seems serious about this kind of thing as he tried to restore respect to the franchise. It would be a remarkable win if the Raiders can get it, and Kubiak would deserve a victory lap and then some if he can actually pull it off.
