Brashard Smith was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 228th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Smith played running back at Miami from 2021-2023, but moved to wide receiver when he transferred to SMU in 2024.
He showcased big playmaking ability last year, as he finished 1,332 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
In the Chiefs offense, they want to have running backs who can make plays in the passing game, and the former receiver was looked at as a perfect threat.
It took him a little while to get things going, but he showcased the dual-threat ability in the the Chiefs 31-0 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Against the Raiders, he carried the ball 14 times for 39 yards. Those aren't the biggest numbers, most of those rushes came with the backup offensive line in the game because the Chiefs were up so much.
However, it was in the passing game with Patrick Mahomes was extremely dangerous, as he had five catches for 42 yards.
Coach Andy Reid is known as one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL, with one area being the screen game. Smith is a mismatch nightmare for defenses when it comes to man-to-man. While he lines up at running back, he is able to run routes like a receiver. That makes him almost impossible for a linebacker to guard.
The Chiefs were looked as a non-contender by many early in the season when the offense was struggling. In the last four weeks, Kansas City has looked like the Chiefs at the beginning of the Mahomes era.
A big part of that is the Chiefs got healthy at the wide receiver position. Xavier Worthy was able to come back four games ago, while Rashee Rice made his season-opener against the Raiders.
Getting all of the receivers back on offense is huge for the team. Rice is one of the best receivers in the league, while Worthy is arguably the fastest player in the league. However, it can't be understated about the emergence of Smith and the Chiefs running game.
While he isn't probably a guy who is going to get 19 touches every week, he is definitely a guy who figures to continue to be a big part of the game-plan moving forward. The Chiefs will look to build off the recent offensive explosion in Week 8 when they host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.
