Well, the end is here for the Kansas City Chiefs playoff streak. In the 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
To make things worse, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and underwent surgery on Monday.
The Mahomes injury has everybody talking, and while the Chiefs dynasty is not over yet, right now plenty of questions loom.
On Monday, Cam Newton spoke about the injury and the future of tight end Travis Kelce during an episode of "First Take."
I think it's the worst thing for the football world because nobody likes to see superstars go down like this," Newton said.
"To see that kind of transpire, it almost guarantees that Travis Kelce is out of the door, too," he added. "Now the thing that gives me hope is that quarterbacks have torn ACLs to come back even better than ever. You've seen what happened to Tom Brady."
"ACL injury does not always mean that struggles are to come...I do have high belief that everything will be well for Patrick Mahomes moving forward," he concluded.
While Mahomes got more tests on Monday, the Chiefs revealed an update that he had undergone surgery.
"Injury Update on QB Patrick Mahomes: Patrick Mahomes successfully underwent surgery in Dallas this evening with Dr. Dan Cooper to repair the tear in his left ACL. Mahomes will begin his rehab process immediately."
But, to Newton's point, quarterbacks have bounced back from ACL injuries plenty over the past couple of decades, with guys such as Brady and Aaron Rodgers being named.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid also echoed the same sentiment when discussing the injury on Monday, saying Mahomes will "get after it" and has good people working alongside him.
On the other hand, it might've been the final time seeing Mahomes and Kelce connect on the field with the legendary tight end expected to hang up the cleats soon, even possibly as soon as this upcoming offseason.
For now, the road to recovery starts for Mahomes, and the Chiefs playoff run and streak of three straight Super Bowls is over in what has been an unfortunate turn of events for Kansas City.
The Chiefs have three games remaining before an offseason with plenty of questions, and it will be Gardner Minshew as the starter for the final stretch in a year that Kansas City fans will definitely want to forget.
