Mike Pennel left the Kansas City Chiefs in the off-season, as he was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. However, things haven't went the way he envisioned, as he had only 15 tackles on the season.
It wasn't a great fit, and the Bengals announced on Tuesday that they would be cutting him. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has been calling for the team to get him back on the team. The team reportedly didn't wait long after his release to get him back in Kansas City.
According to Bob Fescoe of 610 Sports, the Chiefs will be signing Pennel.
Pennel has been in the league since 2014 since he started playing for the Green Bay Packers. He was there for three years before playing with the New York Jets in 2017 and 2018.
He has had two different stints in Kansas City, with the first one being in the 2019 and 2020. He had 53 tackles in those two seasons, and was a part of the Chiefs 31-20 Super Bowl LIV victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
After spending the 2021 season with the Atlanta Falcons and the 2022 year with the Chicago Bears, he was once again brought back by the Chiefs in 2023.
Once again, he provided great depth for the Chiefs during the last two seasons. Once again, he helped them win a Super Bowl when the Chiefs LVIII victory agains the 49ers
He couldn't come to an agreement with the Chiefs this off-season, but it appears that he is coming back to Kansas City.
If there is one area where the Chiefs have an issue, it is the depth on the defensive line. The team lost had big expectations for second-round draft pick Omarr Norman-Lott out of Tennessee. He had shown promise early in the season, but he tore his ACL in the Week 7 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Pennel isn't a guy who is going to come over and become a star for the Chiefs. However, he has played four total seasons under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and knows his role in this defense.
He does a solid job of attacking blockers, allowing linebackers like Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill to fly around to the ball and make plays against the run.
While the Chiefs are starting to play some great football, they are still looking to add some pieces to their team. If the reports are true and Pennel is coming back, then they just added some valuable depth to their defensive line.
