The Kansas City Chiefs haven't had much luck with Justin Fields, and John Harbaugh needs a backup.
The Kansas City Chiefs are sporting a healthy Patrick Mahomes in their early season wins, which means fellow quarterback Justin Field could be expendable and on the move, according to a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
The NYC team in question is the New York Giants, which isn’t surprising given that the Jets already had the Justin Fields experience and probably wouldn’t touch him with the proverbial pole.
But the Giants are in a different situation entirely when it comes to QB desperation, which apparently makes Fields a viable option. The Giants lost quarterback Jaxson Dart for an extended stretch due to knee surgery, which means they’re now stuck with the Jameis Winston QB adventure.
Per Florio, the Giants are in something resembling wait-and-see mode to see how Fields does on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, but you don’t have to be Nostradamus to forecast how this is going to go.
Winston is notorious for keeping both teams in the game when he starts for an extended stretch, and new coach John Harbaugh has to show out when it comes to earning his new $100 million contract.
The Chiefs are currently paying Fields $3 million a year after acquiring him from the New York Jets during the offseason, but the reports on Fields coming out of training camp weren’t good, with the quarterback struggling with accuracy per most of them. This isn’t surprising, given that it’s what Fields typically does.
Harbaugh hasn’t had the Fields experience yet, and he badly needs a backup. The Giants are expected to make a move on Monday, per Florio, and the Chiefs would probably love to unload Fields given that seventh-round draft pick Garrett Nussmeier played reasonably well in training camp and preseason games, to the point where he looks like a possible viable backup for Mahomes.
There’s risk here for Kansas City, however. Even if Nussmeier is ready, he’s still a rookie, so the Chiefs would have to scan the list of street free agents and practice squads around the league to see which veteran retreads are available.
Coach Andy Reid is the latest coach to fall for the notion that Fields can be a real NFL quarterback with some [serious extended] work. He was hoping to install a short-yardage package for Fields, but even that small possibility didn’t work out. He’s probably love to fob Fields off on Harbaugh, who’s just entered Dante’s seventh level of NFL quarterback purgatory.
