The Kansas City Chiefs entered Thanksgiving Day with a 6-5 record and essentially a must-win against the Dallas Cowboys.
But, that didn't turn out to be the case. The Cowboys got the win in Texas, 31-28.
Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes for the Chiefs, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboys saw Dak Precott throw for two scores.
The Dallas offense put up 457 yards of total offense, including 320 passing yards on 65 plays.
All in all, it was another problematic showing for the defense.
Bleacher Report had takeaways for all the games, and here was the one for Kansas City: "The Defense Has Become a Major Problem."
Here's what was written about the mediocre Kansas City defense.
"Double-digit penalties (five of which were defensive holding or pass interference), no sacks and no turnovers. That's not a recipe for success. The Chiefs went the entire month of November without forcing a turnover on defense, and they now have just two sacks in their last three games."
It isn't just the defense, either. The offense has been sluggish, but it surely hasn't helped that the defense has taken a big step back.
"The offense has been inconsistent and mistake-prone, too, but it's a lot easier to envision Mahomes carrying that unit to contention than it is to envision a fading Chris Jones or anyone else getting this D back on track," Bleacher Report added.
As if that weren't enough, veteran defensive tackle Chris Jones was named the "loser" of the week for the Chiefs.
"The six-time Pro Bowler might be having the worst season of his career. He made some plays in Dallas, but he didn't impact Prescott at all. The defense needs him to step up, but the 31-year-old has just three sacks in 12 games. Not ideal for one of the 10 highest-paid defensive players in the sport. This defense may need a makeover in a few months."
If the defense doesn't improve, the road for the Chiefs to get to the Super Bowl -- or at this rate -- the playoffs, is looking very, very tricky.
The Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers are both 6-6, but they sit behind the 7-5 Houston Texans for the eighth spot in the AFC playoff picture, which is one below the final spot.
Something needs to change, and quickly, if Kansas City wants to make it to a fourth straight Super Bowl.
