The Kansas City Chiefs may be in trouble if they can’t figure out how to win one-score games this season.
Kansas City is now 0-4 in one-score games after losing 28-21 to the Buffalo Bills this week in Buffalo, which is out of character for this franchise in recent years.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is bidding for his third Most Valuable Player award, had maybe the worst game of his National Football League career. Mahomes completed an abysmal 44.1 percent of passes (15 of 34) for 250 yards and an interception, while only rushing for five yards on one carry.
Mahomes has practically been the Chiefs’ leading rusher this season, but the Bills defense was able to keep him in check all night long.
Buffalo pressured Mahomes on more than 52 percent of drop-backs, the fifth-most Mahomes has been pressured in a game in his career, and it worked. Mahomes completed just three of 16 passes under pressure and threw his lone interception.
The game wasn’t as close as it seemed, either. If it weren’t for a Matt Prater missed 52-yard field goal, it would’ve been a 10-point difference. Nonetheless, the Chiefs had their chances but couldn’t answer the bell.
It’s hard to put all the blame on the quarterback who always keeps you in games, and it shouldn’t be that way. The Chiefs defense needed to step up and slow Josh Allen and the Bills offense down but ultimately failed.
“Entering Sunday's game, the Chiefs were allowing 16.4 points per game. The Bills surpassed that in the first half, reaching a comfortable 21-13 lead by halftime,” ESPN’s Nate Taylor wrote Sunday. “Allen beat the Chiefs' secondary by targeting his tight ends, as Kincaid and Dawson Knox combined for seven receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown. Kansas City also couldn't make the Bills one-dimensional. The speed of Cook, who finished with 125 total yards, and the mobility of Allen showcased that the Chiefs' pass rush still needs help. That should make for a prime opportunity for general manager Brett Veach to look into acquiring another veteran rusher ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline.”
The Chiefs will go into their Week 10 bye sitting at 5-4 and are on the outside looking in on the playoff picture. The top seven teams make it, and the Chiefs are the eighth seed behind the 5-3 Jacksonville Jaguars.
This is a good time for the Chiefs to go on bye; they get rookie left tackle Josh Simmons back for Week 11, any trade deadline acquisitions can get caught up with schemes and just an overall reset for the team before the final eight games.
