Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy offered encouraging news about his wife, Mia, revealing that her recovery has progressed enough for her to travel with other team spouses.
The Kansas City Chiefs received some encouraging news away from the football field Thursday.
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy shared a positive update on his wife, Mia, who continues to recover after being seriously injured in a shooting at the family's Virginia home in July.
Her recovery has progressed enough that she was able to travel with other Chiefs players' and coaches' wives to Seattle last weekend.
"She's doing great," Bieniemy told reporters Thursday, according to KCTV5.
"She actually went on a trip this weekend. She was on the wives trip. She was a rockstar."
Bieniemy also said Mia's rehabilitation has been going well and that she recently had an opportunity to spend time with him in Kansas City.
The update represents another encouraging milestone following the July 26 shooting at the couple's home in Ashburn, Virginia.
Mia, 57, was hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds. The couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah, was subsequently arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.
Bieniemy immediately stepped away from training camp to be with his wife, missing 11 practices before returning to the Chiefs on Aug. 10.
His return provided an early sign of progress in Mia's recovery, although she still faced a lengthy rehabilitation.
During an August news conference, Bieniemy praised his wife's resilience and explained that her improvement had helped make his return to Kansas City possible.
"She's truly a soldier, she's a saint and it's been incredible to watch," Bieniemy said at the time.
The Chiefs have continued supporting Bieniemy and his family throughout the ordeal.
In an earlier update on Mia's recovery, Bieniemy thanked the organization for its support during a difficult period.
Bieniemy even found room for humor Thursday.
"She actually had an opportunity to come out here and hang out, and I'm sure I got on her nerves," he joked.
