Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Gives Uplifting Update On His Rehab cover image

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave an update regarding how he is progressing through his rehab.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a disappointing 2025 season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

What made the season much, much worse was watching star quarterback Patrick Mahomes go down with a torn left ACL and PCL while trying to mount a season-saving comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium as the crowd went silent with Mahomes not getting up and staff surrounding him.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew II and the Chiefs couldn’t complete the comeback, ultimately ending their playoff hopes on the spot. But with playoff hopes already slim, the main focus was on Mahomes and his health. Shortly after the game, tests confirmed that Mahomes had several tears in his knee and he underwent surgery the very next day, something that is uncommon with those types of injuries.

Mahomes is determined to return for Week 1 next season, and while it’s going to be difficult given the typical timeline for recovery, Mahomes is the furthest from being typical.

“[Rehab] has been going great. Obviously, the long-term is I want to be ready for Week 1. Doctors said that I could be, but I can’t predict what’s going to happen throughout the process but that’s my goal and I’ll try to prepare myself to be ready to play by Week 1 and have no restrictions,” Mahomes addressed the media for the first time virtually. “You want to be out there healthy and giving us the best chance to win. Hopefully I’ll be ready to do some stuff in OTAs and get to training camp and hopefully be able to do a lot there. I’m excited for the process, it’s a long process, but I’m excited for it.”

According to NFL Network’s Omar Ruiz, doctors reportedly have to hold the two-time Most Valuable Player back from trying to push harder in his rehab. This goes to show you just how much Mahomes wants to be on the field with his teammates.

The 30-year-old has established himself as one of the league’s all-time greats and he is nowhere near close to being done. Along with two MVP awards, he is a six-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, three-time Super Bowl champion and took home MVP honors in all three Super Bowl victories.

Despite the team’s middling record prior to his injuries, Mahomes was in contention for his third MVP award as he was leading the league in passing yards at one point. He wouldn’t have won it, but even amidst a down year for the Chiefs, their superhero had his cape on and did his best to will this franchise to the playoffs.
