Chris Jones was a surprise addition to the Chiefs' injury report Friday, giving Kansas City a new concern just three days before its season opener against the Denver Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a new injury concern just three days before opening their season.

Star defensive tackle Chris Jones was a surprise addition to the injury report Friday with a calf issue after not appearing on Thursday's report.

Jones was limited in Friday's practice, according to Arrowhead Pride. He had been a full participant Thursday before being listed with the calf injury Friday.

That makes Jones' status something to watch as the Chiefs prepare to host the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.

The timing is less than ideal for Kansas City.

Jones remains one of the most important players on the Chiefs' defense and has been one of the NFL's most disruptive interior defensive linemen throughout his career.

The 32-year-old is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro who has recorded 80.5 sacks over his first 10 NFL seasons.

Kansas City didn't list any players as limited participants on its initial injury report Thursday. Offensive tackle Josh Simmons missed practice with a back injury, while defensive back Chamarri Conner was out with a knee injury.

Jones' addition therefore represents a new development rather than an injury the Chiefs were already managing when they began their official Week 1 practice week.

There is no indication yet that the calf issue will keep Jones out on Monday. Kansas City still has Saturday's practice before issuing its final game-status designations.

Kansas City can ill afford to lose Jones against a Broncos team that enters the season with high expectations.

Denver will bring quarterback Bo Nix and its offense into Arrowhead Stadium for the AFC West matchup.

For now, Jones being able to participate on a limited basis Friday is much better news than missing practice.

But his sudden appearance on the injury report gives the Chiefs another key player to monitor before Monday night.
