The Kansas City Chiefs made a splash in the 2026 NFL Draft, which will lead to some tough conversations regarding which players will make the 53-man roster.
This week's episode of the Kansas City Chiefs podcast opens with another great update on offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy's wife, Mia, who is still recovering from the tragic shooting at their home.
Mia's recovery is allegedly going very well, and Eric has been present at the Chiefs' training camp for over a week.
The news of the shooting shocked the football world, and the situation worsened when it was learned that their son, Elijah, was the one who attacked Mia. Thankfully, her recovery is on track and she even gave Eric her blessing to return to work.
Looking at some news outside of Chiefs Kingdom, ex-wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was released by his new team, the New York Giants.
This leads to a bit of a celebration from our hosts, Golden J and Chico, who are still pushing for the Chiefs to sign the 29-year-old.
Smith-Schuster has had an interesting career, where he was a standout WR with the Pittsburgh Steelers but has had a tumultuous career since then. After brief stints with the Chiefs and New England Patriots, the one-time Pro Bowler returned to Kansas City before opting to sign with the Giants this past offseason.
Golden J still believes that Smith-Schuster can perform at a high level and that having a superstar quarterback like Patrick Mahomes could revive his career.
However, the question remains whether Kansas City should take another shot on the WR, which could lead to a tough decision to cut a rookie with high potential to make room on the roster.
On that note, Golden J mentions how there's already plenty of rookie talent in training camp, which will bring about some tough decisions for the coaching staff when roster cuts come along.
Moving on to some other news, our hosts discuss Kansas City's first preseason game, in which the Chiefs lost to the Los Angeles Rams 20-12.
One player that Golden J specifically mentions is rookie WR Cyrus Allen, who looked "explosive" in that loss and has since been going viral on social media for numerous connections with Mahomes in training camp.
With the massive overload of talented rookies from this year's draft class, Allen is one that both our hosts are adamant that they'd like to see make the 53-man roster.
The Chiefs travel to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 22, for the second preseason game of the year, where we'll likely get a better idea of which rookies will make the roster for the regular season opener against the Denver Broncos.
