The Kansas City Chiefs haven't had left tackle Josh Simmons for over a week as he's been out with an injury.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is known for running one of the toughest training camps in the NFL, and the results are hitting the Chiefs hard, with left tackle Josh Simmons out for over a week with a back injury, according to a report from Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
Reid said Simmons is being evaluated, per the reoprt, which referenced video from SleeperChiefs.
“He’s just getting his back checked out,” Reid said. “That’s the main thing. He’s doing good when he’s in there. He’s just got a back. Like any other injury, we’ve got to make sure that it’s. . . see if it’s right or what’s wrong with it.”
Simmons had an intriguing offseason after an up-and-down rookie year, as he lost a considerable amount of weight and muscled up instead. The Chiefs staff met with Simmons and decided he needed to pack on some pounds, and now he’s hurt.
The left tackle was an injury risk when the Chiefs took him back in the first round in 2025, as he tore his patellar tendon during his final season at Ohio State, per the report. He started just eight games last year for Kansas City, as Simmons left the team for a month in midseason to attend to a personal issue, and a wrist injury knocked him out down the stretch.
The Chiefs will now start Kahlil Benson at left tackle against the Seattle Seahawks, which sounds ominous given Benson’s struggles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Benson allowed a quarterback pressure and a strip sack, but fortunately quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be sitting this one out.
“He’ll be over there at left tackle this week, and we’ll see how he does with it,” Reid said of Benson.
The Chiefs have been stretched thin at offensive line with Benson struggling, as the plan to move him and tackle Jaylon Moore inside to make them possible depth players didn’t go well. Yesterday the Chiefs made a trade with the New York Giants for Joshua Ezeudu, but there’s been no word on whether he’ll see action tomorrow night against the Seahawks.
The biggest injury news for Kansas City continues to be the ongoing recovery of Mahomes from knee surgery, as he continues to try to talk Reid into letting him take the field. That’s not going to happen, especially with the Chiefs down a left tackle as their offensive line issues continue.
