The Kansas City Chiefs finally have some updates on their offseason following the start of the NFL Combine, where general manager Brett Veach spoke to media members.
One goal for the offseason is to get under the salary cap ahead of the 2026-27 season, though there is plenty of time left to do so. Despite the goal to get under the salary cap, there's still one player that Breach specifically said he wants to retain, tight end Travis Kelce. Goldne J has been on record noting that he doesn't want to talk about the possibility of Kelce retiring, but acknowledges that he wants him to come back next season.
Golden J thinks that we will ultimately find out what Kelce's decision is ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, allowing the front office to plan accordingly, should they need to find a replacement.
Veach also noted that the team has a good running back, edge rushers and defensive players in the draft that the Chiefs are looking at, and that the team is excited to have a top-ten draft pick for the first time in years.
Looking into the first transaction of the offseason thus far, Kansas City officially released defensive end Mike Danna after a six season stinf with the Chiefs, which included two Super Bowl wins. In doing so, the Chiefs took $9 million off the books, freeing up space and getting closer to their goal of getting under the salary cap.
Many will remember the buzz surrounding New York Jets' running back Breece Hall and the Chiefs around the trade deadline, which almost seemed like a done deal considering the Jets' fire sale. However, Hall stayed put and some Kansas City fans still had hopes that the team could land him through trade in the offseason -- but Golden J is shutting those rumors down.
Hall is worth too much to trade for, especially with the situation Kansas City is in with the salary cap -- so the team will likely look for a running back elsewhere, possibly in the upcoming draft.
The duo continues the conversation on possible running backs to keep an eye on, and mentions that Travis Etienne could be the next Chiefs RB1, which would then alter the plan on draft night.
