Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be joined by a host of familiar friends at training camp today.
Every move made by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is being tracked with breathless anticipation, and today’s footnote was about Mahomes taking the field with the veterans, according to a report from Nate Taylor of ESPN, who also named tight end Travis Kelce, running back Kenneth Walker III and receivers Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton.
Mahomes has been working specifically on several different things, according to other reports. He’s been working a lot from under center, and the Chiefs quarterback has also been experimenting with rollouts, especially ones to his left that force him to put pressure on his surgically-rehabbed knee. He’s also dealing with a cumbersome brace that’s still a work in progress when it comes to comfort and ongoing adjustments.
As much as Mahomes tends to suck up all the oxygen when it comes to Chiefs news, there are some other things worth noting. According to a report from Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the efforts of defensive end Ethan Downs to make the Chiefs roster have “come to an early end.”
Downs tore his ACL during a workout, with Alper’s report indicating that the workout took place together with rookies and a handful of other veterans who were getting their work in ahead of training camp last week.
Downs was signed to the Chiefs practice squad last August, Alper added, and he appeared in a single game during the regular season last year. He had five tackles and a forced fumble while seeing action on both defense and special teams.
The defensive end is now expected to be put on injured reserve, with the Chief likely adding another player to take his place once that move is made.
There were several analogous moves made as well, per Taylor’s report. Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott and John Michael Gyllenborg were place on the PUP list, with coach Andy Reid providing an update on Norman-Lott's situation.
"Big guys with ACLs, it takes a little bit of time to get them back and fully strengthened up and ready to go," Reid said Friday of Norman-Lott, who was selected in the second round last year. "We've just got to keep the strength part of it coming with him."
Beyond that, this should be a big day for Mahome updates as he takes to the field with a more familiar cast to try to work his way back to playing in Week 1.
