The Kansas City Chiefs got a big addition to their lineup as running back Isiah Pacheco returned to practice yesterday and was a full participant.
Pacheco has been struggling with a knee issues that’s been reported as an MCL sprain, and his presence was definitely missed against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs experimented with using receiver Rashee Rice in a short passing game version of Pacheco’s role, but Rice had a couple of key drops that played an important role in the occasional sluggishness of the Chiefs offense.
Pacheco has rushed for 329 yards and one touchdown in eight games, with the news reported by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. He’s also caught 11 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown, so his return should also help balance the offense as the Chiefs host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
In other practice news, receiver Xavier Worthy is still dealing with an ankle injury and was reported as possibly being limited yesterday, although that would be news to the members of the Denver Broncos secondary who got outrun by Worthy on a go route in the first quarter that nearly gave the Chiefs the early lead.
Guard Kingsley Suamataia remains in the concussion protocol and did not practice yesterday.
Left tackle Josh Simmons also spoke this week for the first time since he returned to the field after a four-game absence, but Simmons didn’t discuss the personal reasons behind his leaving the team.
“I just want to keep it in house, all due respect,” Simmons said Wednesday, via KCTV in a report written by Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “That’s just something I want to keep inside.”
His willingness to talk generically about this was reassuring to both the Chiefs and their fans, as Simmons left the team suddenly just hours before kickoff when Kansas City played the Detroit Lions back in Week 6.
Simmons worked out and was physically ready to go Sunday against Denver, but some rust did show up. The Chiefs were called for several pre-snap penalties at key moments, and the left tackle was one of the culprits. This issue was one of several "little things" that coach Andy Reid said the Chiefs need to clean up this week.
“I was ready to play,” Simmons said. “Communication with the team was very transparent, especially at the end.”
That will also be the case going forward, he added.
“I will be here for the rest of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs,” Simmons said.
