ESPN expert Peter Schrager had the Kansas City Chiefs landing a talented WR and CB in the first round in his latest NFL mock draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs have an important decision to make with their highest draft pick since they selected quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs missed the playoffs, and it resulted in them landing the No. 9 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The Chiefs also have pick No. 29, which came to them in the trade that sent cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, so they have a golden opportunity to land two talented playmakrers on the first day of the draft, which will be held in Pittsburgh this time.
ESPN's Peter Schrager released his first mock draft, but it's important to note that this isn't what Schrager wants; rather based on the intel he received during the NFL Annual League Meeting in Arizona recently.
Round 1, No. 9 overall: Arizona State WR Jordyn Tyson
Again, Tyson is mocked to the Chiefs, and he is a common projection.
A lot of mocks have the Chiefs selecting a secondary player or an edge rusher, which are glaring needs, but bringing a playmaker such as Tyson to the offense will be music to Mahomes' ears.
"Cornerback and edge rusher are certainly options. I still think finding offensive playmakers is a major priority, though, especially with Mahomes coming off the ACL injury. Tyson pops more than any other receiver in this draft class; he just needs to stay healthy," Schrager wrote.
Tyson began his career at Colorado before playing the final couple of seasons at Arizona State. In 2024, he caught 75 passes for 1,101 yards with 10 touchdowns in his best collegiate season.
In 2025, he played in just nine games due to injuries, but he still caught 61 passes for 711 yards with eight touchdowns.
Round 1, No. 29 overall: Tennessee CB Colton Hood
Cornerback is a pressing need, and there are plenty of edge rushers that could be had in the second round, which makes cornerback an easy choice if the Chiefs grab a different position at No. 9, as they do in Schrager's mock.
Hood, who was a star with the Tennessee Volunteers, would be the choice here in the pick the Chiefs received in exchange for McDuffie.
"Hood was highly productive last season, with 10 pass breakups despite Jermod McCoy being out of the lineup opposite him," Schrager wrote. "Hood -- the nephew of former pro Roderick Hood -- brings a pro-style mentality and a knack for being around the ball."
As shown above, NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah said that Hood should be a starter immediately, so that is exactly what the Chiefs need with this pick.
There are plenty of options for the Chiefs, and perhaps moving up from No. 29 is something they do, but it sure sounds like a WR/CB combination in the first round is the path they plan to go.
