Rashee Rice explained how something the Kansas City Chiefs put on film against Denver helped create one of his biggest plays against Indianapolis.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't need long to turn something they showed in Week 1 into a weapon one week later.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice explained how his work as a blocker against the Denver Broncos helped set up a 30-yard reception in Kansas City's 33-30 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Rice frequently motioned toward the line of scrimmage against Denver before blocking for the Chiefs' running game. Indianapolis apparently noticed.
When Kansas City showed a similar look against the Colts, Rice sold the block before releasing across the field. Patrick Mahomes found him in open space, and Rice turned the play into a 30-yard gain.
Rice explained Wednesday how the Chiefs established that tendency in their season-opening win.
"[I] had a lot of plays where I would motion down into the line of scrimmage and block for the run game," Rice said, according to Arrowhead Pride.
Rice said Kansas City knew the Colts would see that tendency on film and expect him to block for a running back again.
This time, the Chiefs used that expectation against the defense.
The play also demonstrated how Kansas City's revamped rushing attack can create opportunities for Mahomes and his receivers.
Kenneth Walker III has quickly emerged as the centerpiece of that ground game, and his early workload makes it difficult for the Chiefs to take him off the field.
That gives opposing linebackers and defensive backs another threat to account for when Rice motions toward the formation.
Rice has embraced the less glamorous work required to make the deception convincing. Asked Wednesday about blocking as a receiver, he said he's willing to do whatever it takes to help Kansas City win.
The fourth-year receiver has six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown through two games. After catching two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown against Denver, Rice finished with four receptions for 83 yards against Indianapolis.
His increased production came during a dramatic Chiefs victory in which Mahomes improved his already remarkable overtime record.
But at least one of Rice's biggest plays wasn't simply a matter of Mahomes finding an open receiver.
The Chiefs showed Indianapolis something they had already seen on film, convinced the defense it knew what was coming, then did something completely different.
