This Receiver Trade Has Spectacular Potential For Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs need a wide receiver, and there's a trade out there that would be a huge upgrade.

The Kansas City Chiefs took a tough loss against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, and Ben Solak of ESPN offered an intriguing take on the Chiefs’ need to trade for a wide receiver, and he offered some specific trades that could have a big impact.

There were a couple of interesting footnotes in the five deals Solak put on the table. The first is that three of the five have the Chiefs including receiver Xavier Worthy in the deal, which feels very problematic given how much coach Andy Reid seems to still believe in Worthy.

Would he really move on from a receiver he seems heavily invested in and take on a new player in midseason without knowing what he’d get from him?

Another question is about Worthy himself, and it’s even more obvious. Why would any team want Worthy at this point, given how much his value has dropped in the last year or so? He was once seen as a receiver with game-breaking speed who can consistently make big plays and take the top off a defense, but he hasn’t looked like that in a long time.

A couple of the names the Chiefs would get back in these deals are instantly problematic. George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys, for example, is either an existing headache or a headache waiting to happen.

Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars is a name that’s been floating around for weeks now, but it’s also known that Thomas struggled with drops last year, so his value might be minimal to a team like the Chiefs that’s already been struggling with that issue.

Solak also threw out a couple of lesser-known names that are interesting in the type of piece he wrote, but not necessarily the kinds of players the Chiefs would want. Specifically, we’re talking about Dontayvio Wicks of the Philadelphia Eagles and Devaugh Vele of the New Orleans Saints, with neither being high profile enough to raise Chiefs passing game to the level that either GM Brett Veach or Reid would want.

The most interesting name by far was receiver Garrett Wilson. Solak’s trade proposal was Worthy, a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick to the New York Jets for Wilson, and that’s a blockbuster deal that actually make sense if the Chiefs would do it. The ask is enormous, especially after what Kansas City just gave up to get cornerback Mansoor Delane, but that would give quarterback Patrick Mahomes the true No. 1 receiver he genuinely needs.
