The Kansas City Chiefs have been connected to former star receiver Tyreek Hill, but his trial started on Tuesday.
There’s a fantasy that's been making the media rounds lately that Tyreek Hill is going to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs and recreate his glory days as a receiver who once blazed his way through the NFL as a game-breaker. That fantasy ignores several realities, some of which were on display when Hill’s wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro, testified on Tuesday in the first day of her civil assault and battery trial against him in Florida.
Her testimony included allegations that he attacked her while she was pregnant with the couple’s daughter.. The testimony came a day after Hill’s agent told Adam Schefter of ESPN that the receiver would “potentially signing a contract with a new team soon, per a report from Michael Rothstein of ESPN.
Hill still has an active case open with the NFL that involves his possible violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, and NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said Vaccaro's allegations against Hill remain "under review.”
Vaccaro broke into tears on two occasions during her testimony and cross-examination, which lasted for over three hours.
The abuse started back in January of 2024, when Vaccaro and Hill argued over a postnuptial agreement that he pressured her to sign, according to Rothstein. She refused because she disagreed with certain stipulations, and multiple attacks allegedly followed, including one in July where Hill attempted to punch her in the stomach while she was pregnant following an argument.
She was able to block the punch, but other allegations had Hill pulling her hair, breaking her sunglasses and cursing at her while the couple was in Bristol, Connecticut visiting ESPN headquarters. The former Chiefs receiver also threatened divorce, tried to take her wedding ring from her finger and grabbed a necklace off Vaccaro's neck.
He then allegedly put his hands around her neck, grabbed and twisted her breasts and wrestled her to the bed. Vaccaro took photos of the markings Hill left on her chest, saying the incident “terrified” her, and the texts she sent to her mother the next day were entered into evidence to corroborate her experience.
Other allegations included a separate incident in which she tried to pack and leave. Hills subsequently threw her clothes out of the suitcase, broke her computer, again tried to take her wedding ring off and twisted one of her breasts.
Football-wise, Hill can’t play until the NFL’s investigation is resolved to the league’s satisfaction, and Tuesday was the first day of the trial. It’s hard to imagine that resolution happening any time soon, which is what made this story a fantasy the day it was broken.
