The Kansas City Chiefs needed a running back, and a flurry of mock drafts had them predicted to select Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love at No. 9 overall.
The fit made sense, but then, the Chiefs quickly agreed to a deal with Seattle Seahawks star and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III right after the start of free agency.
Walker signed a three-year deal worth $43 million, and it could reach as high as $45 million based on incentives and bonuses.
It's a huge move for Kansas City and Walker, who now joins a loaded offense with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce (who is back for the 2026 season).
James Reber, who is a Next Gen Stats Research Analyst for NFL.com, had eight perfect pairings in free agency thus far, and Walker's name was on the list.
Here is why Reber is high on the fit, and he even called it a "spectacular move" for the Chiefs and Walker.
"The MVP of Super Bowl LX will benefit from Kansas City's upper-echelon blocking; in 2025, the Chiefs' offensive line propelled the team's rushers to a 43.6% success rate (seventh-highest in the NFL). And K.C. achieved that despite being in desperate need of more dynamism from its running back room."
The Chiefs had the lowest rate of 10-plus yard runs in the past two seasons, but Walker does that at a high level. With the Seahawks, he had explosive runs on nearly 15% of his carries, per Reber.
Let's keep in mind that Walker did that while sharing the backfield with Zach Charbonnet for the past few years.
In 2025, Walker had 221 carries for 1,027 yards and five scores in the regular season. In his four years in the NFL, he has two 1,000-yard seasons, and he had 905 yards in 2023 in 15 games, so he has plenty of potential.
Former Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco recently signed a deal with the Detroit Lions, and Kareem Hunt is also a free agent, so that could mean a ton of carries for Walker going forward.
Entering the offseason, it was no secret that the Chiefs had to upgrade the RB position. And, while Love at No. 9 made a lot of sense, the Chiefs' title window is beginning to slowly close.
Kelce is back, and Mahomes is coming off a torn ACL, but adding Walker, who is fresh off a Super Bowl MVP, is a wise decision by the front office in Kansas City.
Whether or not it works out remains to be seen, but at least for now, it seems like a perfect for both sides, and it brings another playmaker to a talented offense.
