Patrick Mahomes silenced injury doubts while Kenneth Walker III dismantled Denver, yet skeptics remain unconvinced. Despite a 21-point statement victory, Kansas City faces a steep climb toward respect.
One week down, 17 more to go. There’s a lot of football to play, but the Kansas City Chiefs put the entire league on notice during the first Monday night game of the season, taking care of their AFC West rival, the Denver Broncos.
The contest was over well before the final whistle, but when it was blown, the score read 31-10 in the Chiefs’ favor. Against a Broncos team that tied for the most wins in football last season, the Chiefs' dominant performance was a statement.
2025 was Kansas City's darkest season in years, with just six wins and the loss of franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes after a major injury. Mahomes worked his way back to be under center to start 2026, and now the football world has reason to fear Kansas City once again.
Despite the convincing win, Bleacher Report’s NFL Staff has ranked the Chiefs only as the No. 10 team in its Week 2 Power Rankings – two spots behind the Broncos.
“The Kansas City Chiefs may have just put the rest of the AFC on notice. It's too early to say that Kansas City is ready for another Super Bowl run,” BR’s Kristopher Knox wrote to justify the placement.
It’s a legitimate argument. After all, the Chiefs lost some major contributors in the offseason, especially in their secondary, and have Mahomes coming back from a torn ACL. Despite the commanding win over a Denver team that was a hair away from the Super Bowl last season, the Chiefs are in a position where they need continued success to prove they are fully back. If that’s what it’s going to take, that’s what the Chiefs will give.
In his first game back against a highly-rated defense, Mahomes didn’t look hindered by his knee in the slightest. Escaping the pocket for a 15-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring, the former MVP quickly shut down questions about his mobility. He finished the game with 184 passing yards and two passing touchdowns, throwing one interception in the process. It wasn’t an amazing game from Mahomes, but it was an encouraging start.
Another encouraging sign from Monday’s win was how the defense held up, limiting Denver to just 10 points. Forcing three fumbles (one of which was recovered), one interception, and allowing just 176 yards was huge for the Chiefs’ defense, showing they, too, can be playoff-caliber despite the key losses over the offseason.
Bringing in Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III looks to be a vital move going forward, as he ran all over Denver’s defense last night. He finished with 173 yards and one touchdown on the ground and added another score from the passing game as well.
A lot went right for the Chiefs on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to jump up into real contender territory just yet. It may take a few more weeks to convince others, but the Chiefs clearly know who they are. In their mind, the Chiefs have no other option but to make the playoffs – and they'd be well on their way if they play every week the way they did last night.
