The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the Denver Broncos in their 2026 home opener, in what appears to be the first stop of a comeback tour.
The Kansas City Chiefs opened up the 2026-27 season with a statement win.
Last year, the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade, going 6-11 and finishing in third place in their division, the AFC West.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a torn LCL and ACL in December, making the future in Kansas City look bleak. The team that was chasing dynasty status suddenly looked like it would be back in the middle of the pack.
Fast forward to Week 1 of 2026 and Mahomes makes an almost unbelievably fast recovery from his injuries to start the season-opener against their division rival, the Denver Broncos, winning handily by 31-10.
The offense was carried by a new face, though, as Mahomes finally had the help he's been searching for throughout his career thus far.
Running back Kenneth Walker rushed for 173 yards, scoring two touchdowns, one coming from an incredible 60-yard run to kick off the second half and another on a two-yard pass.

With the aforementioned stakes of the Chiefs' dynasty on the line, winning the coin toss set up a successful night. Then, on the first play of the game, cornerback Nohl Williams sacked Broncos' quarterback Bo Nix -- setting the tone for the night.
On the same drive, rookie CB Mansoor Delane came up with an interception on third and long, solidifying that the Chiefs came out to play. The unfortunate news, however, is that Delane did not return to the field after the interception because he hurt a nagging shoulder injury.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice joined Mahomes and Walker III in finding the end zone as well, catching a 13-yard pass at the tail end of the second quarter.
Tight end Travis Kelce got in on the fun with a 59-yard catch that moved him to No. 2 on the NFL's All-Time TE receiving yard list.
All in all, it was a fantastic win for the Chiefs, who used the motivation of being doubted this season to their advantage.
Looking ahead to Week 2, Kansas City will continue their homestand by hosting the Indianapolis Colts, who are 0-1 to start the year.
The Chiefs will look to once again assert dominance and with their new brand of smashmouth football at the hands of Walker III, they may be on track to start the year 2-0 against the Colts, who allowed 202 rushing yards in Week 1 -- the third-worst in the NFL.
