Mahomes and potent offense reclaim elite status. Chiefs surge to second in power rankings after dominant MNF showing.

Despite a not-so-eye-popping 5-3 record, the Kansas City Chiefs have moved into the No. 2 spot in Bleacher Report’s Week 9 power rankings after their 28-7 Monday Night Football victory against the Washington Commanders.

“The Chiefs are ranked higher than several two-loss teams in the power rankings for a reason. Following a slow start to the season, they've picked up steam, winning three consecutive outings and five of their last six games,” the B/R NFL Staff wrote in the power rankings article. “Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs look like an NFL powerhouse with a complete pass-catching group.”

In their last three games, the Chiefs have outscored their opponents by a ridiculous 89-24. The Kansas City offense has once again found its rhythm after a slow start to the season, thanks in part to injuries and suspensions. Now that receivers Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are back together, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has no shortage of weapons to look at on any given play.

Tight end Travis Kelce remains a serious threat despite his age, catching six balls for 99 yards and a touchdown last night against the Commanders’ secondary. Rice added an offensive outburst of his own, bringing in nine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Worthy finished with five receptions for 53 yards.

Together, Kelce, Rice, and Worthy combined for a deadly 245 yards and two touchdowns on 20 receptions. If the offense continues to play like it has in recent weeks, it’s hard to imagine an NFL defense that could completely shut it down.

The defense has been huge for the Chiefs this season as well. They rank fourth in the league in yards allowed per game. Their defense in the passing game has been elite all season, and they added two more interceptions in Week 8. As a unit, Kansas City has held opposing teams to just 16.4 points per game – the second-lowest in the league.

With an efficient quarterback like Mahomes and a defense that consistently gets stops and gets takeaways, it’s nearly impossible to best the Chiefs at full strength – and we’ve seen that in the last three weeks.

Sitting at No. 2 in the power rankings, only the Indianapolis Colts are ahead of the Chiefs. With a Week 9 contest against the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs have the chance to make a statement win and grab that coveted No. 1 ranking. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EST on Sunday.
