The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 with each team having vastly different outcomes during the first two weeks of the season.
The Kansas City Chiefs look like they got their swagger back after a severely underwhelming 2025 season, going 2-0 over the reigning American Football Conference West champion Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts.
The Chiefs offense looks more like it did over the last decade, averaging 32 points per game while the defense allows 20 points per game on average despite losing key members of the secondary.
Although it was the secondary that took a major hit in terms of personnel, it was running back Jonathan Taylor that did most of the damage for the Colts against Kansas City’s front line during their 33-30 overtime thriller. Denver didn’t have much of anything going offensively in Week 1.
In Week 3, the Chiefs draw what could be a “trap game” type matchup against the Miami Dolphins, a team projected to be in contention for the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2027. RB De’Von Achane is the biggest threat to make stuff happen, and even if he does, Kansas City should be able to generate enough offense to offset anything Achane does.
Miami’s defense allowed 27 points to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1, letting RB Ashton Jeanty carve them up both on the ground and through the air (102 rushing yards, six receptions for 45 yards and two touchdowns). In Week 2, the San Francisco 49ers dismantled the Dolphins with a balanced passing and rushing attack.
The Chiefs have the firepower to operate like San Francisco did against a weak Dolphins defense, but I expect more of a Kenneth Walker III game – he’s been unreal and just what the doctor ordered for Kansas City.
If he performs throughout the season like he has thus far (small sample size, I know), he could be the favorite to win Offensive Player of the Year. The 2025 Super Bowl Most Valuable Player is second in carries (47), second in yards (290) and third in yards per carry (6.2) to go with a touchdown as well as nine receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.
The gameplan should just be to give Walker the ball and get ready to block; his burst and breakaway ability is exactly what the Chiefs’ running game was missing last season, so expect them to take advantage of his talent early and often this year.
I do expect QB Patrick Mahomes to cook again just like he did against Indianapolis – Mahomes completed 32 of 47 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns after understandably struggling against Denver in Week 1.
Kansas City should take this one with no problem, but anything can happen.
